Bringing Together Aging and Mindfulness
We have the potential to live longer. In fact Americans live longer and this trend has been going on for a while now. The question is what kind of quality of life to expect? Or maybe even more importantly; what can you do to ensure the best possible level of well-being as you grow older.
Interestingly enough and not surprising at all, those who practice mindfulness and meditation live better lives as they get older.
The research in this area is very convincing!
The benefits show themselves on both the physiological, even cellular level, as well as in the emotional and cognitive health of participants.
This study looked at improvements in a group of elderly clients in nursing homes with an average age of 89 years old.
“….on paired associate learning; 2 measures of cognitive flexibility; word fluency; mental health; systolic blood pressure; and ratings of behavioral flexibility, aging, and treatment efficacy. The Mindfulness group improved most,”
It is never too late to train your mind in mindfulness and mediation and the results are certainly worth it!
The Research on Aging and Mindfulness
Do you know what telomeres are? they are a cap at the end of chromosomes and they act as a predictor for an organism’s length of life. This research looked at telomere length and the effect of mindfulness meditation.
“….we propose that some forms of meditation may have salutary effects on telomere length by reducing cognitive stress and stress arousal and increasing positive states of mind and hormonal factors that may promote telomere maintenance. Aspects of this model are currently being tested in ongoing trials of mindfulness meditation….”
Longevity and Well-being, is it possible?
The answer is yes. Aging and mindfulness go hand in hand to allow for better quality of life!

- A healthier body
- A calmer mind
- A greater ability to face whatever challenges life brings
- More meaningful relationships
- Better stress management
- Compassion for self and others
- A state of balance and harmony
