Life often presents us with many challenges. For many of us there comes a time when we feel a need to pause and reflect. We take the time to consider how past decisions and previous choices we have made may have contributed to where we are at this current moment.

While reflection can be helpful to self-growth and self-actualization, at times reflecting can take the shape of the dysfunctional loop of rumination. Our thoughts can become negative and promote a self-fulfilling cycle of doubt and misgivings. When you notice how this habit is truly problematic to your emotional, as well as your physical health, you can turn to mindfulness for help. Mindfulness can help you reframe your internal narrative, your old story, and allow you to move on from past painful decisions or situations, into a state of health and well being with a new ability to make wise choices for yourself.

  • Take a break from the Phone– There is no doubt that technology is an integral part of our lives. Often though, we use it as an escape or distraction. It is precisely because of this reason that your smartphone should be stashed during your mindful moments. Focus on you, in this present moment- not the notifications that are demanding your attention. Maybe turn off notifications and see how that affects your day to day life…
  • It’s Normal for it to be a challenge initially: Like learning any new skill, mindfulness takes practice. Being aware of this will help to mitigate the frustrations you may experience when you first start practicing. The overflow of thoughts, sensations, and difficulty concentrating that are your daily normal will ease with time, bringing an increased sense of peace afterward as you become more mindful.
  • Practice – Even if it’s Not Perfect: Your first days are the hardest. Keep at it! With each attempt you will align and connect your mind and body and your practice will begin to feel more natural. Remember, we are here to support and guide you! Even the experts were beginners once – stick with it so you can enjoy the rewards that will follow.
