Facing breast cancer and surgery is difficult on all levels. So many emotions come into play. Dealing with the diagnosis of cancer and the fear it provokes is heart wrenching. Having to undergo surgery and the anxious feelings this elicits adds yet another layer of difficulty.
I accompanied a friend yesterday to her chemo treatment. A woman sitting next to her started talking to me and telling me her story. She spoke of her day to day struggle with her illness and the treatments. She spoke of how the surgery was really just the beginning of the long road to recovery. She explained how she feels that her life is now depleted of joy.
She is tired, sad, and feeling weak and discouraged. (more…)
What About Toxic Relationships?
Lately I have become more aware of different aspects of relationships between myself and friends, relatives and clients. It made me think about what constitutes toxic relationships. I found myself recently letting go of a friendship I had kept for many years, a friendship that lasted despite some serious trials and tribulations, and then one day my friend did something that was mean and hurtful and I found that I was really struggling with my emotions. I was having a difficult time letting go of how I felt. I wanted to be able to be detached; my notion of detachment which I call compassionate detachment. Compassionate detachment to me means that while you are still caring about the individual and wishing them well, you are not taking their reoccurring troubling behaviors as a personal offense. Well, I was doing great with that until I got personally attacked.
I always attempt to look at myself and what motivates me. I strive to be compassionate and helpful. I truly come from love and even even when I am hurting I remind myself that love is at the core of our being and always available. It got me thinking about how I am in relationships.
When are relationships a problem? And I am not talking about blatant abuse, emotional or physical. That’s easy to detect.

Collecting Beliefs As You Get Older…
We all carry with us a set of beliefs that we picked up along the way, often sometime in our childhood.
There is a movie script that goes in our minds. It may say: “I am a coward”, or “I cannot do this or that thing”. These beliefs are limiting us. They set the tone for every aspect of our lives and very often we don’t even recognize them for what they are. We are so used to that voice that speak in our minds that voice that says the same thing, that voice we have lived with for so long that we are convinced it is the truth.
But is it the truth? How do we know? We can tell when we start reflecting and bringing awareness into our lives. Noticing our thoughts and emotions as observers rather than active participants. Beliefs drive emotions and emotions drive out thoughts. We are constantly busy explaining to ourselves why we feel a certain way.
